Jaishawn Barham’s strong Cowboys camp has put a starting role in play, but an injury scare now threatens one of Dallas’ biggest defensive surprises in Oxnard.
The Dallas Cowboys expected Christian Parker and Caleb Downs to dominate the defensive conversation at training camp in Oxnard.
Instead, rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham has barged into the spotlight and may be forcing the coaching staff to rethink the entire position battle.
Barham, a third-round pick out of Michigan, arrived in Dallas with an intriguing but incomplete resume. He made his name as a physical pass rusher, but the Cowboys are asking him to become much more than that.
They want him playing downhill against the run, dropping into coverage, communicating in Parker’s new system and still creating pressure when his number is called.
So far, he hasn’t looked overwhelmed.
At 6-2 and 240 pounds, Barham has the size Dallas has lacked in the middle of its defense. More importantly, he appears to be processing the game quickly.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer praised the rookie’s ability to take coaching from the meeting room and apply it immediately on the practice field.
That’s how a developmental prospect starts stealing first-team snaps.
Once the pads came on, Barham’s stock climbed even faster. His physicality became harder to ignore, and the possibility of him pushing veteran newcomer Dee Winters for a starting job stopped sounding far-fetched.
With DeMarvion Overshown limited by more leg soreness, the Cowboys suddenly have a real opportunity for Barham to become more than a rotational piece.
His emergence could also affect Dallas’ reported interest in Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks.
Brooks would bring proven production and experience, but the Cowboys shouldn’t overpay if Barham is already showing signs that he can handle a major role.
Then came Thursday’s scare.
Barham left practice on Thursday with an apparent injury and was escorted to the locker room. The severity remains unclear, but the timing couldn’t be worse.
A rookie learning a new position needs every rep he can get, and any extended absence could slow the momentum he has built through the opening weeks of camp.
The good news is that Barham has already made a strong impression. Coaches have praised him, teammates have noticed him and the defense may have found an unexpected difference-maker.
Caleb Downs remains the marquee rookie. Malachi Lawrence still carries first-round expectations. But Barham may be the player who changes the Cowboys’ plans fastest.
