Dallas paired elite coaching with rookie phenom Caleb Downs, forming a defensive foundation poised to eliminate coverage busts and transform Jerry Jones’ roster into a legitimate contender.
The Dallas Cowboys' offseason had been simmering along nicely prior to the NFL Draft.
Christian Parker was hired, along with a new defensive staff, and in free agency, the likes of Rashan Gary, Jalen Thompson and Cobie Durant were signed.
Then came the draft, and Dallas' hope for 2026 exploded as Caleb Downs somehow managed to slip all the way to No. 11, where the Cowboys made a trade to move up from No. 12 to get the stud safety.
Seen as the exact type of player the Cowboys need, according to draft experts, Downs possesses great football IQ, is versatile, and can easily be the leader of the defense in his rookie season.
Of course, in an ideal world, he won't have to be, but everything we've seen and heard about Caleb over the last month tells us he's naturally going to assume that role; it's just a matter of when.
For Sports Illustrated's Eva Geitheim, she's listed every team's reason for optimism heading into the new season, and when it comes to Dallas, it's easy to guess.
“Despite picking outside of the top 10, the Cowboys still landed one of the best defensive players in the draft, Caleb Downs, and managed to accrue more picks, while taking Malachi Lawrence later in the first round,” Geitheim wrote.
“The first round was so successful that Jerry Jones treated himself to a margarita during the post-draft press conference. With the addition of Downs, new defensive coordinator Christian Parker and several other players, the Cowboys have reason to believe their defense will be better.”
With Parker at the helm, there is a thought that the defense will be better simply because of his coaching. But then we have Downs, who is the centerpiece to it all.
Last season, we saw so many blown coverages by the defense that left fans baffled as to why players were allowed to run so freely down the field.
The thought is that with Downs in the secondary, those coverage busts won't happen under Parker's guidance, which is a big call to make for a rookie.
But that is the level of talent Downs possesses.
Fans were already feeling much better about the defense when Parker was hired, but now that the Cowboys have paired him with Downs, fans are tentatively daring to dream.
