Injured players DeMarvion Overshown and Shavon Revel return to practice, injecting much-needed talent into the Cowboys' defense.
The defense has been the topic de jour for the Dallas Cowboys as they prep for their Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos. Coming off of a standout performance in the team’s 44-22 Week 7 win over the Washington Commanders, there’s been rumblings of trading for some outside help.
Well, it appears that the team is indeed getting some help soon, although the calls are coming from inside the house. For the first time this year, rookie cornerback Shavon Revel and third-year linebacker DeMarvion Overshown joined the Cowboys on the field for practice as the team opened a 21-day practice window for the pair on Wednesday.
Overshown, of course, tore three ligaments in his right knee last December, ending what had been a breakout season (and his first on the field after tearing his ACL prior to his rookie 2023 season) in which he recorded 90 total tackles and five sacks on a sour note. While Overshown has struggled with injuries in his brief career, the flashes he’s shown when on the field have been tantalizing.
As for Revel, he was projected to be a first-rounder heading into his junior season at East Carolina University. Unfortunately for him and ECU, he tore his ACL at practice just a few games into the season.
Still, he declared early for the draft and was still picked No. 76 overall by Dallas despite injury concerns. It’s always a question of how well a player can bounce back from such a serious injury, and there will likely be the natural rookie growing pains to go along with the slow start that most players face after an ACL tear.
But, as long as the Cowboys are realistic with their expectations, it’ll be exciting to see such a well-regarded prospect finally get his feet wet. With that in mind, expect Dallas to still at least kick the tires on bringing in some outside help at the position, be it via trade or a signing.
After being besieged by injuries to start the year, it’s nice to see the team finally get some good news on the injury front. The thinking was that, even though it was a longshot, if Dallas could stay afloat in the standings until these reinforcements returned, they might just have a shot at the playoffs.
Thanks to Dak Prescott and friends, they’ve done just that, sitting at 3-3-1 and second in the division. Now, it’s up to the returning players to hold up their end of the deal and give the team the push they need.
