Cowboys Detail Jaydon Blue 'Lightning' Expectations In Year 2 cover image

Blue had a difficult rookie season, but what do the Cowboys want to see from him this offseason ahead of Year 2?

Jaydon Blue's rookie season for the Dallas Cowboys didn't go as planned for either him or the franchise.

With big hopes hanging on Blue as he entered training, it felt like he was progressing nicely, but an injury halted his impact. We barely saw Blue at all through the regular season, with his appearances brief.

We didn't know at the time the reason for it, with our own Mike Fisher revealing Blue's inability to slow down and wait for holes to open up, often leading the back to run into trouble, being a key reason.

So too was Jaydon's pad level, which was reportedly too high, with the Cowboys wanting him to run lower to the ground. All of that forced Blue to work in the shadows on his craft, as fans eagerly awaited his return to the team.

It came in Week 18, and it was worth the wait, with his trademark speed and burst on show as he managed his first-ever NFL touchdown.

But that was his rookie season.

What can we expect from Blue in Year 2? Well, Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams knows what he wants to see from Jaydon.

“I think just continuing to mature into a professional football player, is a process that everybody kind of has to go through,” Adams said on the Cowboys Nation podcast. “It's a different journey for every person that comes in here. So, just continuing to mature into a professional football player that can handle their business, and it's not just one person, either, right?

"It takes a village to run the football. At the end of the season last year, we're playing with guys that weren't necessarily active on game day in the beginning of the season. So, we really need every single person in that room to be ready to carry the flag when they're called upon.”

It will be a process for Blue, but he will enter training camp needing to prove himself again.

Fish has stated Dallas' "Thunder and Lightning" plan for Javonte Williams and Blue in 2026, but that only comes to fruition if Jaydon keeps improving.

Becoming a consistent player this offseason, day in, day out, will see Blue get more chances under Brian Schottenheimer.

The 2025 season was one full of learning for Blue, and now the hope is that he can take those lessons and apply them in 2026.

And if he does, the Cowboys could have quite the running back tandem for Dak Prescott.
