Vaughn, who spent multiple years with the Cowboys, is now facing a career-defining couple of months.
Former Dallas Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn is now staring uncertainty in the face as it pertains to his NFL career.
With the running back failing to make an impact in Dallas, it was the Denver Broncos who picked up Deuce and signed him to their practice squad last season.
But Vaughn never saw the field, and now, according to reports, Denver is waiving him, so he is on the lookout for a new NFL home.
Deuce was a feel-good story to come out of the 2023 NFL Draft, as his father, Chris, worked as a scout for the Cowboys and got to call his son to let him know he would be drafted by the team his dad works for.
It melted hearts, as it isn't something we often see in the NFL, and given the emotional nature of that phone call, it made everyone hope that Deuce made it in the NFL.
But after just 40 rushing yards from 23 attempts in his rookie season, and 70 yards from 17 attempts in 2024, Dallas decided to move on from Vaughn.
Deuce landed an NFL lifeline in Denver, where he was part of the practice squad, which as we know, can be a precarious position, and thus, it has turned out to be true.
The Broncos clearly didn't think Deuce could make an impact in the running back room that already consisted of RJ Harvey and J.K. Dobbins, not to mention fourth-round pick Jonah Coleman.
So now Vaughn is in the NFL wilderness as the offseason rolls on, and it will be interesting to see if any team takes a flier on him in the coming weeks.
Deuce is talented, as he showed in Dallas' preseason games. He was speedy and shifty, with a knack for finding running lanes when there weren't any, but there was a reason he never truly made an impact in Dallas or Denver.
Other players were simply better and offered more.
Not much of a special teamer, which, in today's NFL, most fringe players have to be, Deuce couldn't impact games solely as a running back, which, it feels like, was the only arrow in his quiver.
Still young and with plenty of tread on his tires, Vaughn now waits for that phone to ring for his next NFL chance.
But when that will be is anyone's guess.
