Cowboys Ex Mike McCarthy A Coach Finalist With Hometown Steelers cover image

Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy could be about to return to the NFL head coaching ranks.

The NFL's coaching carousel continues to turn, with the Dallas Cowboys in the process of hiring their new offensive coordinator.

But others are looking for their next head coach.

A couple have already found their's with John Harbaugh now with the New York Giants and Kevin Stefanski with the Atlanta Falcons.

But there is one big opening that is yet to be filled - the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With Mike Tomlin now out after nearly two decades at the helm, the winds of change have blown through the franchise.

The "in thing" is to get a young, offensive-minded head coach to bring the glamour back to franchises, but for the Steelers, they might have a different avenue to go down.

And in truth, it's good for the soul.

The Steelers are expected to speak to former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy about their head coach opening.

Why is that such a big thing?

Well, for one, McCarthy was born in Pittsburgh, and our own Mike Fisher calls Mike "Pittsburgh strong."

So it could be an ideal homecoming of sorts to take charge of the NFL team where Mike grew up.

After 13 years with the Green Bay Packers and five with the Cowboys, McCarthy could be the Steelers' new head coach. Granted, it is only an interview, but "Big Mike" could be about to return to the NFL coaching circle.

Rarely do we see head coaches get three bites at the apple, but you can make the case that McCarthy has been rather successful in his time as a head coach.

A 172-112-2 record, a Super Bowl win, and out of 18 years as a head coach, McCarthy led his teams to the playoffs 12 times. That's not a bad ratio.

McCarthy led the Cowboys to three straight 12-5 seasons but went 1-3 in the postseason, which ultimately led to Jerry Jones parting ways with the Super Bowl winner.

McCarthy in Pittsburgh is an interesting option. And no, it's unlikely to see a reunion with Aaron Rodgers, as the four-time MVP is expected to retire.

The fact that the Steelers are interviewing Mike shows they are leaving no stone unturned, and after a year hiatus from coaching, McCarthy could be back in 2026, leading his hometown team.
