Jones isn't at The Star just to take his place as a backup; Dallas wants him to challenge to be a starter.
The Dallas Cowboys didn't feel great about their tackle situation as the regular season edges closer.
So, the franchise traded away Nate Thomas to the Houston Texans and then made a trade for Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Broderick Jones.
A swing tackle right now, Jones comes to The Star looking to get back to the best version of himself after neck fusion surgery.
With the Cowboys now having someone who they think offers more than Thomas as a backup tackle, they also have plans for Jones...and it's not to be just a backup.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer made it clear that Jones is here to be in direct competition with Terence Steele to be the starter at right tackle.
"When we made the trade, the first thing I did, I reached out to Terence Steele and told Terence that Broderick's coming here to compete with him to be the starting right tackle," Schottenheimer said.
"We're not going to move Broderick around. So, Broderick will be competing with Terrence to be the starting right tackle of this football team."
So that is a big statement.
But given that left tackle is also a bit of an unknown, Schottenheimer called Tyler Guyton to ensure the young tackle knew the move for Jones wasn't because of him.
"I also called Tyler Guyton, when we made the trade, and I wanted to make sure Tyler Guyton understood that this has nothing to do with him," Schottenheimer added.
For Jones, having had 38 starts in the NFL with the Steelers, he was likely looking forward to getting back on the field with real NFL bullets flying and being part of Mike McCarthy's offense.
But the NFL moves fast, and he was shipped off to Dallas in a move that surprised him, but Broderick also stated he needed a change.
"It was a surprise, but I was excited for the change," Jones said. "Just going into the year after last year, me getting injured, just trying to get my feet back up under me. I feel like a new start was needed for me. I'm just ready to get here and get started."
So the Cowboys clearly see value in Jones as a swing tackle more than in Thomas, and while there are some concerns about his health and play, Dallas no doubt did its research.
And now, the right tackle spot is going to be a fascinating watch in 2026.
