Are Cowboys Tanking? Javonte Williams Moves Amid 7 Roster Changes cover image

Williams is a free agent at the end of the season, which means a bigger contract could be on the horizon.

It has been some year for Dallas Cowboys running back Javonte Williams with the naysayers over his offseason move now painfully quiet.

In a year that has seen Javonte rush for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns (both career highs), he has developed into a crucial cog in coach Brian Schottenheimer's offense.

His powerful, bruising runs and his sound pass protection skills have seen Cowboys Nation appreciate Williams' work in 2025. But now comes the business side of the NFL.

First things first: On Saturday, he was moved to IR with that nagging neck/shoulder stinger ... one of seven Dallas transactions on the day that as our Mike Fisher notes, hints at the 7-8-1 Cowboys subtly moving into "Organic Tank'' © mode.

As you can see, Javonte and Malik Davis are out for Sunday ... nd rookies Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah are in.

And secondly?

Williams is a free agent, and after he watches Sunday's finale at New York while nursing a mild injury, a new contract will be forthcoming. But whether that will be with Dallas is anyone's guess.

However, if it is, the Cowboys will have to pay up.

Because Javonte will want to strike in free agency while the iron is hot, right?

"Yeah, I mean that's definitely the goal but just take it one day at a time,” Williams said. “Don't try to put too much on yourself. I can't control it. So, I just got to let it play out and see what happens.”

So many want Williams back and it is an easy decision, but as always, it comes down to money.

What will the Cowboys be willing to pay Javonte in 2026?

It would likely be a multi-year deal, at say $6 million APY?

We know the Cowboys aren't too fond of paying significant money to running backs, but there's no doubt Javonte deserves to be paid. It's just a question of how much.

With the season winding down, it has been one to remember for Williams, who came to Dallas with a lot of people skeptical of what he could deliver.

Well, those skeptics are now true believers.

And as we turn to 2026, what is Williams' New Year's resolution?

"Win the Super Bowl next year," a smiling Williams said. "That's mine. That's all I want."

Join the club, Javonte.
