The Cowboys invited former Texas offensive lineman Cole Hutson to minicamp, giving the ex-Longhorn a chance to compete for depth.
The Dallas Cowboys are adding another name to their offseason competition, and this one comes with a familiar Texas connection.
Former Longhorns offensive lineman Cole Hutson has been invited to Cowboys minicamp, giving him a chance to push for a roster spot after a steady college career in Austin.
For Dallas, it’s a low-risk move with a clear purpose: keep building depth up front while evaluating players who already have experience in high-pressure football environments.
Hutson appeared in 48 games for Texas and made 23 starts, giving him the kind of body of work that teams value when they’re filling out offensive line rooms.
He was part of a Longhorns unit that became one of the better groups in college football, earning national recognition as a Joe Moore Award semifinalist before later becoming a finalist.
There’s also a built-in Cowboys connection. Hutson will reunite with former Texas teammate Jaydon Blue, the running back Dallas selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Blue’s presence could help Hutson settle in quickly as both players try to carve out roles with America’s Team.
The challenge won’t be easy. Minicamp invitations don’t guarantee anything, and Hutson will have to prove he can handle the speed, strength and technique demands of the NFL. But his college experience gives him a legitimate starting point.
If Hutson sticks, his job would be simple but important: protect Dak Prescott and help open rushing lanes for a backfield that now includes Blue. That’s work he’s already familiar with from their time together at Texas.
Hutson is one of several former Longhorns chasing NFL opportunities, including Mason Shipley, Matthew Caldwell, Travis Shaw, Jack Bouwmeester, Ethan Burke and Jaylon Guilbeau.
For now, Dallas is giving Hutson his shot. What he does with it will determine whether this becomes more than a minicamp story.
