Milton has landed back on the practice squad, and one coach couldn't be happier.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Joe Milton was added to the practice squad after being cut, and he can now continue developing at the position.
When the news filtered through that Joe was cut, many thought he would get claimed by another team, given how well he had performed in Dallas' three preseason games.
But - as predicted by Cowboys insider Mike Fisher, who detailed Dallas' plan all along - that wasn't the case, and now he returns looking to push Sam Howell for reps on the practice field.
Of course, Howell is QB2, but that won't stop Joe from trying to usurp him at some point during the year, and if the worst-case scenario happens with Dak Prescott, Dallas has two solid options to try and keep the ship afloat.
Indeed, Fish is predicting exactly that for the course of the 2026 season.
"Howell can line up as QB2 in practice today, with Milton running the scout team,'' Fisher said. "But the competition never has to stop. Every guy on the scout team, every guy on the practice squad, is trying to get the call-up.
"Milton has the potential for that as much as anybody on the practice squad.''
And for head coach Brian Schottenheimer, he's happy Joe is back at The Star.
"When he informed me he was coming back, I was elated," Schottenheimer said. "This is a guy that's worked his butt off to be where he is and to develop the way he's developed, and the talent is so rare. For him to be able to stay here with the relationships that he's built, understanding our system, the locker room, the other coaches, we were thrilled to get him back."
How Joe approaches his work now from a mental standpoint will be interesting.
After all, a few days ago, Dallas told him he wasn't good enough and cut him, but Milton is now back, and no doubt with a little chip on his shoulder after losing out to Howell.
But for Dak, while he thinks Joe is upset, he knows that he won't let it impact him moving forward with the team.
"I'm sure he's pissed off, but doesn't allow that competition and him not getting what he wants to derail his overall growth and just the progression and the route, trajectory that he's ultimately on and just staying on that," Prescott said.
So, Joe can work on his game in the background, and it was clear he made positive strides in his game this offseason. Now, being able to stay with the same team, with the same scheme and teammates, expect Milton's progress to continue.
Even if it means he's QB3. ... while trying to climb up the depth chart.
