Defying rookie norms, Caleb Downs is already commanding the Dallas defense. The young standout’s vocal leadership and veteran-like authority at OTAs have coaches and insiders stunned.
It has only been a month or so, but Caleb Downs is as advertised for the Dallas Cowboys as OTAs began at The Star.
We had heard all during the draft process of what sort of player Caleb was both on and off the field, with many seeing him as a potential leader of the defense in Year 1.
The football IQ and ability to be the glue that holds the backend together, there was a lot of pressure from outside the building for Downs to be the guy.
But we really hadn't seen anything from Downs until OTAs began, and while it was fleeting, Bobby Belt from 105.3 The Fan noted something that stood out to him about the Dallas rookie as he talked about what he wanted to see from OTAs this week.
Often, it is the team's veterans who are the most vocal and get players to do drills the right way, but in this case, Belt saw Downs as that guy.
"We have heard Caleb Downs, he's such a leader, he's so smart, we knew all those things, I did not expect to hear him talking," Belt said. "A lot of times guys are not loud, little joke, but there's not usually a lot of barking out instructions or direction. If it is, it's almost always from a veteran.
"In this instance, it was Caleb Downs, like, hey, no, no, no, step back. He was very clearly on top of I'm supposed to be doing this, and everybody else is supposed to be doing this.
"And when a coach would step away or was doing something over here working with another guy, then Caleb was keeping everybody on top of things."
That is the sort of leadership from Downs that has fans thinking this defense could see a serious uptick in performance in 2026.
Brian Schottenheimer stated that Downs made some mistakes this offseason but added that he "doesn't make the same mistake twice," which is a big feather in his cap.
We don't often see rookies come into the NFL system and be like a duck to water, but at this stage of the offseason, it appears Downs is traveling along nicely.
"Watching Downs out there where he was completely comfortable," Belt added. "It didn't come off in any sort of a know-it-all way or like you're bossing people around, very much came across like, "Oh, he knows. Caleb knows.
"I'll just listen to whatever Caleb says I need to do," which I thought was really cool. So, I'll be interested to see if I see some more of that."
So, Downs has gotten things under control early at The Star, and it will be interesting to see if that pattern continues as the offseason rolls on.
The Cowboys drafted Downs to be the centerpiece of the defense under Christian Parker, and it appears he's doing all the right things that a leader of a defense would do.
Even if it is a little surprising to see a rookie as the one doing it.
