Spann-Ford has had a strong start to the season, and Ferguson isn't surprised.
It has been quite the offseason for Dallas Cowboys tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford as he has risen high on the depth chart.
Seen as TE2 early in camp, Spann-Ford was rewarded with a new three-year, $18 million contract, as he has become a key cog in Brian Schottenheimer's team.
Not just a tight end who excels at blocking and has improved as a pass-catcher out of sight, but also a special teamer.
Against the New York Giants, Spann-Ford was sure-handed, catching both targets for 14 yards. But against the Washington Commanders, he didn't catch a pass...but he laid a brutal special-teams hit that drew a huge reaction from the AT&T crowd.
So, yeah, Brevyn has had a good start to the season.
“He earned every bit of that," Ferguson said of Spann-Ford's contract. "That dude works crazy hard, this entire offseason was with him, being able to work together, work with Dak, get routes in, lifts in here.
"He motivates me. He's younger than me, but at the same time I have times where I do look up to him, and he's one of those guys that I love playing next to. He's just lighting people up, and that's awesome to see."
With Schottenheimer often stating that Spann-Ford has a sort of gladiator/enforcer mindset, and that has been on show multiple times, and as it turns out, Brevyn has a rather interesting nickname among the tight ends in the room.
"That's his nickname is the young gladiator in the tight end
room," Ferguson added.
So it's been a positive start to the season for Spann-Ford, who easily usurped Luke Schoonmaker as the backup tight end.
And whether it is catching passes or blocking on offense, to making bone-chilling tackles on special teams, No. 89 is doing everything his coaches want him to.
The young gladiator is here to stay, folks.
