A stomach bug sidelined Joey Porter Jr. during his home debut, but the star corner leveraged the recovery time to master the playbook ahead of Green Bay.
After his efforts against the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys corner Joey Porter Jr. was looking forward to his home debut at AT&T Stadium against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
But sickness sent him home early, with a vision of Porter, bucket in hand, being escorted out of the locker room by an employee.
And no, Richard Sherman, it has nothing to do with his contract status.
Now that a week has passed since the "incident," if we even want to call it that, Porter spoke to reporters about how he felt before the game.
And yes, he really was sick.
"I really just couldn't hold anything down, I just kept throwing up," Porter said. "I tried to fight through. I tried to take a nap before the game just to shake it off, but I just couldn't hold anything down. So, that's when they made the call to send me home."
So, Porter's home debut will have to wait a little while longer.
But while Joey watched his new teammates battle and, in truth, get blown off the field, he said he used this mini-bye week, when they weren't playing Tampa, to dive deeper into the playbook.
With the Cowboys desperately needing him in the secondary, Porter knew that while not playing was bad, he could use it to his advantage.
"I feel great, those extra days definitely help," Porter said. "It helped me really lock in with the playbook, too. So, it was a win-win. I was mad that I couldn't be out there with the guys on that Thursday night.
"So, I was pretty mad about that, beating myself up. My dad was just telling me keep the main thing the main thing and focus on what we got ahead of us. So, that's Green Bay."
Now, the Cowboys could be getting Porter at 100 percent health, plus a star corner who now knows the Christian Parker playbook.
As it happens, Porter popped up on the injury list earlier this week with an ankle issue. But as our Mike Fisher notes, he was a full participant on Thursday. (Notably, DeMarvion Overshown is also being upgraded a bit.)
So, it wasn't all bad for the Cowboys.
But with the Packers up on Sunday night, is this the time when Porter won't have a snap count?
"Definitely," he added. "That's what I'm shooting for. That's what they're shooting for as well. So, that's what we're going to try to do."
Onto Green Bay we go.
