As the veteran quarterback chases franchise records and an elusive Super Bowl ring, a sudden health setback at The Star adds new uncertainty to his legacy-defining season.
FRISCO - When Dak Prescott's Dallas Cowboys career comes to an end, he will likely be remembered as a franchise quarterback who did everything except win the big game. ...
Unless things change in the coming years.
That means he won't be in the same tier as Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, but that he could be in the tier below with Tomy Romo and Danny White.
But Prescott, for all of his regular-season numbers, most of which he will be the franchise leader in, one thing is stopping him from being mentioned among Cowboys legends, and that's a Super Bowl.
Dak currently has the franchise record for passing yards, is six touchdowns away from owning that record, and is 12 wins away from having the most wins (held by Aikman at 94).
So, in theory, Prescott could be the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards, touchdowns, and wins by the time 2026 comes to an end.
That is Ring of Honor-type stuff.
Along that path, as he approaches his 33rd birthday, Dak also needs to stay healthy. And so it is notable that this week at Cowboys minicamp here inside The Star, the QB's name has popped up on the Dallas injury list.
Prescott will be limited today because of a minor knee issue.
Said coach Brian Schottenheimer: “(It's) nothing we’re concerned about.”
And yet ... there is enough concern to keep Dak sidelined during some of the drills, at least for the moment.
Other Dallas injury concerns for the day include Malik Hooker (back), Jalen Thompson (pec), James Houston (back), DaRon Bland (foot) and Donovan Ezeiruaku (hip).
Meanwhile ...
Super Bowls are what quarterbacks are judged on, and despite his impressive regular-season numbers, Dak hasn't even sniffed a championship.
Prescott surely wants to be remembered as an all-time great, but more than that, he will tell you he wants to lead the Cowboys to the franchise's first Super Bowl title since their 1990s dynasty.
If he can win a Super Bowl ring, Prescott would not only join Hall of Famers Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman as the only starting quarterbacks to lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title, but he would also put himself in position to possibly join them in Canton.
You can argue that all that is missing from Dak's resume is a Super Bowl.
From his work in the community to what he has done on the field, there isn't much Prescott hasn't done.
But the one thing he hasn't achieved ... is glaring.
Could you imagine how Cowboys Nation and the NFL world would view Prescott if he were the one to end that now-infamous three-decade-long drought?
Looking backward? The drought is long.
Looking forward?
Prescott has done a lot in his NFL career, but that one gaping hole in his resume is the thing stopping him from cementing his legacy as one of the Cowboys' elite. ... a process that can continue with good health.
