The Cowboys didn't address their linebacker needs in the draft, so they've traded to get one.

The Dallas Cowboys needed to fix their linebacker issues, and some thought that would come in free agency. It didn't.

Then, when the draft rolled around, some thought maybe a linebacker like Sonny Styles would be on the board when Dallas picked, but again, the franchise missed out.

The Cowboys, after drafting Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence, also managed to grab a couple of extra picks by trading down.

And on Day 2 of the draft, the Cowboys used a fifth-round pick to trade for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dee Winters.

Having played three seasons with the 49ers, Winters has played at least 15 games in each season and started all 17 games last year, recording 101 combined tackles, eight tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits.

Now, Christian Parker gets his linebacker.

Cowboys fans might not know much about Winters, but they quickly will.

Seen as an athletic and aggressive player, Winters - just 5-11 and 227 - is good in coverage, has speed, and loves making a big play.

Drafted in the sixth round out of TCU by the 49ers in 2023, coming off his best season in the NFL, he now lands at The Star, looking to make a name for himself.

It isn't known if this will be the only move Dallas makes for a linebacker, but the Cowboys only parted ways with a fifth-round pick for a player who does have a lot of upside.

The question is, will he be the green dot for Dallas? Or is that earmarked for someone else?

Either way, the Cowboys addressed their linebacker need with Winters, who is still only 25 years old and is coming off one of the better seasons of his career.

Now part of Parker's defense, Winters is expected to slot straight into the middle of the defense and help stabilize it.

Whether that is as a starter or a rotational player remains to be seen, but Dallas clearly saw something it liked, and now the former 49er is a Cowboy.
