Dallas’s once-dominant run game has plummeted to 31st in the league. Brian Schottenheimer eyes a turnaround against Philadelphia's struggling defense to restore balance to a fractured offense.
One thing the Dallas Cowboys were good at last season was running the football with Javonte Williams.
Boasting a top-10 run game that averaged 125.8 yards per game, the Cowboys could get you on the ground and through the air.
But this season, for whatever reason, the run game has nearly been totally abandoned.
Dallas has had just one game of 100+ yards, and is averaging just 76 yards per game, ranking them 31st in football.
That is a serious flip of the script, and the worst part is that head coach Brian Schottenheimer knows the Cowboys need to run the ball more, yet doesn't do it.
Why?
"Yeah, I think it starts with calling more runs, which requires being in more normal, close games where you're not having to play from behind,” Schottenheimer said. “I do think that the more you run it, the better you feel. You figure out combination blocks and things like that.
"I will say early on in most of our games, we've not run it as well as we're capable of. There's been times where as the head coach and the play caller, I have to make the decision of, okay, the clock says X, we're down X. What is it? All right, it's time to go.
“But, it starts with just letting these guys get into a groove. Let these guys get bats at the plate, if you will. That's a big part. But the negative runs, we got to clean those up. There's too many negative runs.”
The Cowboys haven't exactly been blown out in 2026, and there have been ample times when the run game is still of use.
One helper? Dallas is getting healthier overall, per Mike Fisher's note on the Friday injury report, with KaVontae Turpin seeming like the only big issue.
Against the Green Bay Packers, only down by 14, the Cowboys nearly completely abandoned the run game in the second half, as Williams had just 11 total carries for the entire game.
In the second half, Dallas had 45 pass attempts to just seven runs.
So, the run game could have been used; Schotty just didn't, and he did reveal that some runs were checked out of by Dak Prescott based on what the Packers' defense was showing.
But still, we all know complementary football is where it's at, and right now, the Cowboys are the furthest thing from doing that.
Against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football, the Cowboys again have a chance to run the football as the Eagles have allowed 100+ yards on the ground in every game this season.
So, if there ever were a time to get Javonte and the run game back on track, it's now.
If Schottenheimer wants to, that is.
