The Cowboys were famously in for Crosby early in the offseason, but many thought the franchise was out on a potential move. Well, they might not be.
OXNARD, Calif. - We know that the Dallas Cowboys were heavily into Maxx Crosby early in the offseason as Jerry Jones looked to make a splash in free agency.
Dallas thrice offered deals to bring Maxx to The Star, but they were rebuffed. Then the Baltimore Ravens jumped in, offered the moon, failed him in his physical, and Crosby returned to the Las Vegas Raiders.
For now.
We have been consistent in thinking Dallas should pick up the phone and look at getting Maxx through the doors ... and on Tuesday here in Oxnard, Jones seemed to agree ...
To a point.
As the Cowboys opened training camp with their "State of the Union" press conference, it was only natural that the Crosby idea would come up - at least in the minds of the media.
Jones was asked why the Cowboys "walked away'' from the Crosby deal, and what is rather telling is that pure silence fell over the entire press conference for roughly five or so seconds.
Then Jones spoke.
"We didn't,” Jerry said.
When asked to elaborate on it, Jerry responded ... in his customary Little Rock Door-to-Door Salesman Word Salad Jibber-Jabber style.
"No, because there's nothing more to elaborate about, but we did not walk away,'' he said. "That's about all there is to say, but we understood his injury well, and we thought he could help us.
"We're surprised the way that was resolved. But to basically take what happened with him after he came home back to the Raiders, to inject anything about what we're thinking or doing because he went back to the Raiders, would be a mistake."
And then COO Stephen Jones - mindful of how close his dad was inching toward tampering - chimed in, “he’s a Raider."
So that has opened up a can of worms with the thought that the Cowboys still have an iron in the fire when it comes to Maxx.
The fact that Jerry stated that Dallas didn't walk away from a deal hints that maybe something could be coming down the pipeline.
Jones also said he spoke to another NFL team owner Monday about this sort of move. At one point he used the word "fireworks'' to describe what he's looking for.
Jerry calling Mark Davis of the Raiders seems like a solid guess.
Plus, when we add in Jerry stating, "I'd give up future (draft picks) to add substantive (help) to where we are today to get the right kind of deal to improve us opening day''? in pursuit of Super Bowl contention?
The meaning is clear.
If the Cowboys get a chance to acquire Crosby (or a Crosby-like defensive player) to improve Dallas' Super Bowl chances in 2026 - even if it hamstrings the team down the road - Jerry will consider doing it.
So as we breathe life into training camp here in Oxnard, the Cowboys are also breathing life into the Crosby trade idea some thought dead.
