With the trade deadline looming, a bold proposal suggests Dallas ship its All-Pro receiver to San Francisco, but the reality of Jerry Jones’ roster remains immovable.
The NFL's Nov. 10 trade deadline is approaching and owner Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys find themselves balanced precariously on a tightrope.
They enter "Monday Night Football'' at the Philadelphia Eagles with a 2-4 record (same as Philly's), which wouldn't normally justify a team being a trade "buyer.''
But because the NFC East is basically "Loserville,'' they also enter this showdown as a solid favorite to win the division, which could justify a "go-for-it'' approach.
Jones says he's leaning - with his toes on that tightrope - in that latter direction.
"I see opportunity,'' Jones said, indicating he might be a "buyer.'' "I would be active if we could get a chance to help the team this year."
But critics of the Cowboys' mediocrity see the team's wobbly situation another way.
They see no change of Dallas being good enough to make any playoff noise, even if they stumble into the postseason.
And "opportunity''? They see the Cowboys roster as being a carcass to be picked apart.
Enter San Francisco 49ers insider Grant Cohn, a clever and colorful figure who is imaging that the Cowboys should be "sellers'' ...
And that they should "sell'' All-Pro receiver CeeDee Lamb to the Niners.
"I think Lamb wants off that team,'' said Cohn via his YouTube channel. "You can just see it in their body language. They're embarrassed to be on the Cowboys. They're embarrassed to play with Dak Prescott The organization is embarrassing, and I bet every wide receiver who's disgruntled would love to play for the 49ers right now.''
Cohn is a long-time colleague of ours, and has earned our respect in so many ways ... but he's so off-base here that we suspect he might just be doing a "bit.''
There is no indication that Lamb is 'disgruntled' and wants to leave Dallas. As poorly as they've played, the Cowboys players aren't 'embarrassed' to be in Dallas. There is no anti-Dak movement in the locker room at The Star.
Now, as far as "loving to play for the 49ers right now''?
San Francisco is 6-0, with the best record in the NFL. So, yes, it's a lovely place to be.
But the Cowboys have no intentions of trading away a player in Lamb who is under contract at $34 million APY through 2028, who if he's traded would leave Dallas with $15 million in dead money, and who at age 27 is viewed by the Cowboys as a top-five NFL receiver.
In other words, Cohn's fantasy is not a Cowboys reality.
Lamb, who this year has recorded 48 receptions for 577 receiving yards with four touchdowns in six games, is Dallas' most decorated star, having been named to the Pro Bowl in five of his first six seasons and the All-Pro team three times.
He is, in short, one of the best solutions to the Cowboys struggles.
If the Cowboys continue to trudge along, record-wise, into November, there is an argument to be made regarding selling off other pieces. Lamb running mate George Pickens - who is in the final year of his contract and might be seeking the same sort of salary Lamb has in 2027 - deserves mention there.
But Dallas dumping Lamb to the Niners?
When Cohn said, "I haven't seen anyone mention or link this guy (Lamb) to the trade market or to the Niners''?
There's a reason for that. And that reason is, the Cowboys would have zero justification in putting Lamb "on the trade market or to the Niners.''
