We know the Cowboys have a lot of irons in the fire, but do we now know a timeline for a potential move?
Ever since the Dallas Cowboys' state of the union press conference to open up training camp in Oxnard, fans and media have been waiting for some news on a potential new signing.
With Maxx Crosby and even Jordyn Brooks still being talked about as potential additions, many are wondering exactly when a move could be made.
Of course, we know one could happen at any minute, but right now, after the initial chumming of the water, there hasn't been much since.
With the Cowboys having their first padded practice, the coaching staff is beginning to get a feel for what they have on the roster and where some potential issues are.
Often, teams will get into camp, get through the first couple of weeks evaluating the roster, and then maybe make a move to strengthen the team.
But for head coach Brian Schottenheimer, when will he know where his roster's weak spots are?
"I think it's different every year," Schottenheimer said. "We have an idea right now of where we feel we're strong and maybe where we feel like we've got great depth, and then, hey, we're a little thin here. I would say it's after that second preseason game. I mean, we got to see these guys play real football.
"So, I think you got to probably get through the two joints [practices], the two preseason games. Once we break camp, head back to The Star after the Arizona game. I think we'll have a better idea of where we stand. But it doesn't mean that we're not always looking for potential additions to our roster."
So, if we read between the lines there, a move for someone might not happen until after the second preseason game.
That gives Dallas and its evaluators two games and two padded practices to see where they might have a weakness to address.
Whether that is Crosby, Brooks, Bobby Wagner, or even Von Miller, Schottenheimer might have just given us a rough timeline on when the Cowboys could be actively looking for reinforcements.
Yes, a move could happen before, and it very well could happen near the November 10 trade deadline, but at least we know of a rough timeline for when the Cowboys could be looking to add some firepower to the roster.
