As Troy Aikman’s broadcasting tenure nears its end, the Hall of Fame quarterback signals a willingness to reunite with Jerry Jones to fix the struggling Dallas franchise.
We have stated for years around here that iconic former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman would be an invaluable source for the franchise if Jerry Jones would ever swallow his pride and try to make the hire.
Whether that be as a general manager, which we know Troy has stated he thinks about, or whether it is a consultant or any other position in the football department, there is no denying that Aikman could be a serious weapon if the Cowboys chose to utilize him as such.
The Miami Dolphins have used him as a consultant, and we wrote at length this summer about how Dallas missed a golden chance to bring Aikman into the building to help the football department under that same setup.
Well, thanks to our Mike Fisher's exclusive visit with the Hall-of-Fame QB and award-winning TV star, maybe that opportunity has come around again.
With Troy's contract at ESPN up after this season, many are wondering what his future in football looks like. And, suddenly, if Cowboys owner Jones is ready, we get the sense it is the ideal time to put a call to Troy and see whether he would want to come aboard and help the franchise that he tells Fish he loves.
As it happens, Jerry was asked that question on 105.3 The Fan on Friday and gave an interesting answer.
Said Jones: "(There's) nobody more qualified than Troy Aikman. ... I'm a big Troy Aikman believer in terms of his ability to get the job done. I don't know anybody who knows more (about) football."
Right, so Jerry knows Troy is more than qualified to hold a position within the organization.
But one thing we didn't know was whether Aikman had an appetite to return to the franchise where he had a Hall of Fame career.
Well, in an exclusive chat with Fish, Troy was asked to reflect on Jones' remarks and was quizzed specifically about if he would sit down with Jerry for a conversation.
Aikman's answer represents an NFL blockbuster.
"Oh, I absolutely would," Aikman said on the Fish Report. "I would have lunch, breakfast, or dinner with Jerry anytime he wants it, and it wouldn't necessarily have to be because it's a job interview. We go back a long way, we've been through a lot. Our relationship is complicated, even he would agree with that, but it is one I believe that is built on respect.
"I would welcome any conversation with Jerry ... If Jerry came to me and felt in his heart that I could lend some services that would help make them better, I'd have a hard time not taking a good look at that."
That, after all these years of conflict, is new information. And ... That is a big, blinking green light if I have ever seen one.
Jerry, can you see the light?
To us? With Aikman's present ESPN connection seemingly about to end after this season, we don't think Jerry will get a better time to strike to try and get one of the best players and persons in NFL history back into the building to help steer this ship.
We have stated for years how beneficial having Troy at The Star could be, but the two big obstacles were ...
1 - Do Jerry and Troy get along well enough to examine the idea?
That's now been addressed.
2 - Why would he leave his high-paying TV role for a role in an organization?
Troy, for the very first time, just addressed that in his Fish visit.
Add it up, and we say the perfect time has come to recruit Aikman - who tells Fish he doesn't care about "titles'' - to help this embattled franchise.
Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner. Troy and Jerry. Let's eat!
