With Javonte Williams' future uncertain, the Cowboys could eye a productive Falcons backup to bolster their backfield and complement their offensive scheme.

Going into the 2025 season, many thought that the Dallas Cowboys would have an issue in their backfield. Their running backs going into the season were Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, which did not exactly bode well.

But the latter was able to explode for a career year and defy all expectations.

Williams was one of the best backs in the league, but he is going to be a free agent when the offseason hits. If the team is not able to agree on a new contract with the 25-year-old star, they may have to look elsewhere.

In a recent article by Ryan Smith of Pro Football Focus, he outlines how he thinks every NFL team should address their biggest need. He thinks that need is running back for Dallas, and he lists Atlanta Falcons backup Tyler Allgeier as a potential target.

"Despite his reduced role, Allgeier has remained one of the league’s most productive runners on a per-touch basis," Smith writes. "Now a free agent, Allgeier will have the opportunity to land with a team that will make him a lead back once again. He would transition nicely to Dallas’ inside-zone-heavy scheme behind an offensive line that ranked in the top 10 in PFF run-blocking grade in 2025."

Another option for the Cowboys would be to trust in second-year back Jaydon Blue, who the team drafted out of Texas in the fifth round of this past year's draft. But a guy like Allgeier who has been in the league a few years provides a more instant solution.

He finished this past season with 514 yards and eight touchdowns, and he did so with basically half the rushing attempts that Bijan Robinson was given ahead of him.

It is clear that he can take a bigger work load, as he finished his rookie season with just over 1,000 yards on 210 attempts.

The Cowboys would love to keep Williams and have him be the running back of the future for them. But if for some reason they can't do that, going and getting a guy like the Falcons backup in free agency could be an intriguing idea.
