The Cowboys have yet to identify who will wear the green dot for Christian Parker's defense, but Brian Schottenheimer has his favorite.
One key element to Christian Parker's Dallas Cowboys defense has yet to be finalized, and that is who will wear the green dot for his unit.
Seen as the player who not only gets the job of delivering the play call, but who is also responsible for getting the defense lined up correctly, plus making all the right checks, it isn't a role that just any player can take on.
And for the Cowboys, as rookie minicamp has concluded, the franchise isn't any closer to figuring out who that might be.
Some have thought rookie Caleb Downs could take on that mantle, with his incredible football IQ already having him learn Parker's playbook.
Others think it could be a veteran, as in most instances, it is an older player with experience who takes on that important role.
But for head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the franchise will put a number of players through that green dot test to see who the role suits.
“We're going to train so many people in the green dot that we're going to find out who's comfortable doing it,” Schottenheimer said. “It might be D-Mo (Overshown), it might be Jalen Thompson, it might be Dee Winters. I think at the end of the day, communication comes down to not just the green dot, but the entire defense.
"We've got time. There'll be trial and error. There'll be different packages of guys being together. I have my favorite, who I think will be our green dot, but I'm not going to share it with you.”
With a number of players in the mix to take on the quarterback role for Parker's defense, it is going to be interesting to see who separates themselves from the chasing pack.
Initially thought to be a linebacker and perhaps someone like a Jordyn Brooks, who Dallas was linked with for weeks, but that now seems like it isn't on the table anymore.
So more than likely, it will be a player already on the roster, and Schottenheimer rattled off some names that he thinks could be ready to take on such an important role.
The offseason will see a lot of position battles take center stage, but perhaps something that might take a lot of the attention is who will end up wearing the green dot for Parker's defense.
