Dallas's star quarterback admits the offense is over-relying on explosive passing plays while neglecting the physical run game necessary to reestablish their dominant championship-caliber identity.
The Dallas Cowboys, it seems, have found their offensive identity after the win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Granted, that does sound like an odd statement for a team that boasts Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens, but the Cowboys, through the first part of the season, didn't look like the offense we had come to know last season.
The high-octane, explosive offense was nowhere to be seen for two straight weeks, leaving fans scratching their heads. Plus, the Cowboys seemingly neglected the run game as well.
But against the Eagles, the Cowboys' offense flipped the script, didn't air it out, and ran the ball 25 times, with Javonte Williams for 155 yards. Yes, Lamb and Pickens got their lick of the ice cream, but it was a more balanced attack.
Which begs the question: how can the Cowboys go from what they had last year to the up-and-down form line they had on offense this season?
Well, for Prescott, it isn't as simple as the offense transitioning from one year to the next. Plus, he hinted at why Dallas had become so one-dimensional over the past few weeks.
“I don't think we're necessarily struggling creating it, we know what we want to be,” Dak said of the offense's identity. “When you've got the weapons, when you've got the talent we have sometimes, you can get caught up in trying to air it out.
"Knowing how great we are in the pass game and want to just take advantage of that. not forgetting but taking for granted, what those guys do up front, them controlling the line of scrimmage, controlling the time of possession with just running the ball, and that opening up our play actions.
"So yeah, everybody returned, but things don't just happen. It's not like last year just rolls over into this year. So we've got to reestablish everything, find out exactly who we are, and get comfortable improving that.”
It can be easy to forget about the run when you have the weapons in the passing attack Dallas does.
But now, with the lightbulb moment happening in Philadelphia, the hope is that this is the way forward for Schottenheimer's offense this season.
Williams is the workhorse; Dak is managing the game while also taking shots with Lamb and Pickens against a heavy box, which makes the Cowboys so much harder to defend.
Now, it won't happen every week, but as Prescott stated, the Cowboys might have taken their offensive line in the passing game and forgotten how dominant they can be in the run game.
So, from here on out, expect this Cowboys team to go back to being the tough, nasty offense that can also hurt you with two devastating receivers while punching you in the mouth with the run game.
An offensive identity, it seems, has just been born.
