The former All-Pro member of "The 88 Club" recounts a tense traffic confrontation involving a drawn weapon and a physical dispute, all witnessed by his children.
Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant is reacting via video after a Sunday incident during which he says a police officer aimed a gun at him following a confrontation Bryant had with two men who he accused of reckless driving.
"Treat everybody fair. Treat everybody fair. Treat everybody with respect," he said in a social-media post on Outkick. "Do your due diligence on what’s actually going on."
Bryant, 37, played eight seasons with Dallas, earning three Pro Bowl selections and making All-Pro in 2014. He finished his Cowboys stint with 531 catches, 7,459 receiving yards and 73 receiving touchdowns. ... and a proud membership in "The 88 Club,'' a jersey number reserved over time for star receivers Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin and now Dez Bryant.
Bryant was handcuffed and on the ground as footage provided to Outkick by the former player seems to show an Southlake police officer aiming a gun in Bryant direction.
"It’s always been good,'' Bryant said of his relationship with law enforcement officials in Southlake, where he lives. This situation was just extremely unfortunate. ...
"My reputation means everything to me.''
Included in the "unfortunate'': Bryant's children were present to witness the scene.
Bryant alleges a man threatened to shoot him following a conflict with two men who Bryant accused or reckless driving.
The incident, which resulted in Bryant receiving an assault citation, began when the two men allegedly cut him off in traffic. Bryant ended up in the same restaurant parking lot with them and urged them to drive safer, he said.
Bryant acknowledged that he used profanity before one of the men "threatened'' him and "insinuate(d) that he’ll, you know, he’ll shoot me or whatever.''
Bryant said he responded with a warning of his own.
"You pull that gun, I’m telling you right now, you better use it because if you don’t I’m going to do something to you," he recalled telling the man.
At one point, the man began filming with his phone, and Bryant said he knocked the phone from the man's hand.
Bryant said an office who showed up at the scene drew a gun and ordered all three parties to the ground. He said his girlfriend arrived with his two daughters and that she recorded the encounter that was sent to Outkick.
"I was really more so concerned about my children, you know, looking at their dad, you know, being on the ground with a gun pointed at me," Bryant said.
Bryant asserts that his actions were all about self-defense.
Under Texas law, assault involving offensive or provocative physical contact is generally a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500. The citation does not identify a specific statutory subsection.
