Schottenheimer was a candidate to be the head coach prior to the interview process last offseason, and as it turns out, he was ready to stay no matter what.
Brian Schottenheimer was named the Dallas Cowboys' head coach last offseason, as he took over from Mike McCarthy.
After being with the Cowboys for a couple of seasons, first as a coaching analyst and then as an offensive coordinator, Schottenheimer knew the team and the staff inside and out.
With many outside the building wanting the Cowboys to undergo a thorough interview process and talk to a host of candidates, Schottenheimer at the time wasn't on everyone's list of top candidates for the job.
But as we know, he was the one Jerry Jones settled on, and things have gone well since he has been sitting in the big silver-and-blue chair.
However, with Schottenheimer working so closely with McCarthy, who was fired, Brian could have easily moved on to other ventures in the league.
But in an appearance on the Twins Talk podcast, Schottenheimer revealed that he and the Cowboys already had a plan for him before Brian was named head coach.
"So what we did is while they were going through the [coaching] process, I wasn't sure, and there was a number of other teams saying this very humbly that were courting me and trying to say, 'Hey, we want you to come be our coordinator," Schottenheimer said.
"So after just talking it over with Stephen and Jerry, we had made an agreement that I would stay here no matter what. I didn't want to leave, I really wanted to be the head coach and put our fingerprint, our blueprint on it. And that's what God had planned."
So, Schottenheimer, regardless of whether he got the head coaching role, was going to remain involved with the Cowboys.
As it turns out, he's now the main guy in the building and is embarking on his second season as the head coach after laying a good foundation last year.
The Cowboys have been the big topic of discussion this offseason due to the number of changes made both on and off the field, as the defensive overhaul has been huge.
Schottenheimer is already putting his fingerprints on this team, especially the offense, and given that it is his first head-coaching role, he's doing a decent enough job.
So, while the coaching interviews were being conducted last offseason, there was never any doubt over what Schottenheimer wanted to do.
He wanted to stay with the Cowboys, in any capacity, and as God's plan revealed itself, that capacity was as the head coach of America's Team.
