The Cowboys had a visit with the son of former player and Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith at Dallas Day.
The Dallas Cowboys' running back room will be a fascinating watch over the course of the offseason.
With Javonte Williams, Jaydon Blue, Phil Mafah, and Malik Davis all on the roster, the battle for spots is tough.
But there could be another name thrown into the mix, and it's one that Cowboys Nation might like.
As the Cowboys held their "Dallas Day" for draft prospects, an invite-only event for local college players, one name on the list was that of E.J. Smith.
That might not seem like much, but he is the son of Cowboys legend and Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith.
Now, an invite to "Dallas Day" doesn't mean the Cowboys are going to select Smith, but more so, the franchise is looking to cover all bases ahead of the draft.
And for head coach Brian Schottenheimer, it's a great thing to see Smith work out knowing what his father did for the franchise.
"Very cool," Schottenheimer said via ESPN. "You know me, man, I'm family. I'm all family. And you watch his film and he was an incredible short-yardage runner, powerful. But, yeah, just watching him move, seeing him in person, the type of young man he is, it's cool."
In his six years of college football, Smith has been a bit-part player, never going over 218 yards and 54 attempts in a single season.
But that doesn't mean he won't have value...especially in Dallas.
Great in pass protection, Smith is physical, versatile, and can be used as a receiver (470 yards from 71 receptions in college).
Those are all traits that the Cowboys would like.
But while it would be a good story to see Smith be on the same team where his father made his name as one of the NFL's best, I'm not sure there is a spot for him. At least now.
With Blue, Davis, and Mafah, not to mention Hunter Luepke, all ahead of him if he were drafted - say, on Day 3 - a practice squad spot might be all Smith can get in 2026.
We have seen Deuce Vaughn be a great story for a couple of seasons, before it didn't work out in Dallas, and who knows, maybe Smith is the next "family'' story to be given a shot.
