Schottenheimer knows his team is in a hole right now, but he's determined to be the one to lead them out of it.
The life of a head coach isn't easy, and it isn't for the faint-hearted, something Brian Schottenheimer knew when he became the Dallas Cowboys' head coach.
Having seen his father, Marty, serve as an NFL head coach for years, Brian has had a front-row seat to all the good and the bad, and right now he's going through a tough stretch.
But when you are the man in charge, you are responsible for putting out all the fires, and the buck starts and stops with you.
Schottenheimer spoke of how he talks to his pastor and the O2X group as he tries to keep on top of his mental health in what is a really challenging time, but personally and professionally.
But how does Schottenheimer balance his job with the mental and psychological challenges he faces, compared to the nuts and bolts of the X's and O's?
“It's more of a head coaching thing, in terms of there's always ups and downs whether you're coaching the offensive line, the defensive backs, you're the coordinator, but when you're in charge of the entire team, you get pulled in different directions,” Schottenheimer said.
“You deal with the emotions that you have. You deal with the emotions that your players have, that your coaches have. And so sometimes you feel like you're a clinician, a psychologist, and again, that's where I think I am at my best."
And right now, Dallas needs Schottenheimer to be at his best.
Sitting at 2-4 and coming off two woeful performances, there's some wanting Brian removed as head coach, and the social media slamming has been, as expected.
But it is always darkest before dawn, and make no mistake, Schottenheimer isn't going to go quietly into that good night.
He knows it hasn't been good enough, but through the person and coach he is, he believes he's going to lead this team out of the hole they're currently in.
"Am I frustrated and pissed off? You're damn right I am," he added. "But I'm gonna roll my sleeves up. I'm gonna go to work, and I'm gonna solve it. I think by leading that way and being like that, the players are going to follow, the coaches are going to follow, and so that's the way I take pride in trying to carry myself.”
So, Schottenheimer is saying all the right things, and we know how good he is at the podium.
But fans have already had enough of that. They want action. They want change. And most of all, they want a winning football team in 2026.
Time will tell if Schottenheimer can give it to them.
