The Cowboys have two free agent priorities, and the hope is that both will remain with the franchise.
Brian Schottenheimer's first year as an NFL head coach with the Dallas Cowboys was ultimately a failure, but that doesn't mean there weren't little green shoots popping up.
With Schottenheimer and his desire to have the best culture in professional sports, the key tag line, many roll their eyes at anyone trying to fix the culture in Dallas.
But at least Schottenheimer is trying.
And we can see some of what Brian has done, especially with George Pickens.
Yes, he came to The Star with a reputation after being in Pittsburgh, but for the most part, Pickens was kept in check during the season.
The locker room vibe with Schottenheimer at the helm is clearly different from when Mike McCarthy was head coach, with Schotty's juice and energy on a day-to-day basis noticeable by players and staff alike.
He is doing his best to ensure the environment is as good as possible for his players and staff, which is not easy to maintain consistently.
But we're getting an idea of what Schotty is about and what he wants to build, and we might have gotten further confirmation of that from Matt Bowen's top 50 free agent best fits piece for ESPN.
Both George Pickens and Javonte Williams' "best fits" are with the Cowboys.
"All signs point to Pickens staying in Dallas after his breakout season in 2025 -- and it could happen with the franchise tag," Bowen wrote.
"Williams returning to Dallas makes sense after he rushed for a career-high 1,201 yards in coach Brian Schottenheimer's offense."
Given the environment Schottenheimer created, both Pickens and Williams thrived in ways they hadn't before in their careers.
Was Schotty solely responsible? No, but he played a big role in it and allowed players to be themselves.
Pickens developed into a Pro Bowler, while Williams produced a career-best season running the football, and both happened under Schottenheimer's watch.
So it might seem like an insignificant thing for both Pickens and Williams to have their best fits be Dallas, or it might point to what Schottenheimer is attempting to build at The Star.
Either way, both played key roles in making the offense an elite unit, and we know players perform better in a good environment.
And Schotty has done a good job of creating one in Dallas.
