Spann-Ford has been making plays both on offense and special teams, so is it time to give him more snaps?
The Dallas Cowboys' tight end room right now is rather volatile if you ask Cowboys Nation, and for most, Brevyn Spann-Ford is the clubhouse leader for good vibes.
We know what Jake Ferguson has done from a scoring standpoint, with 3 TDs this season, but other than that, Ferguson has struggled to make much of an impact, with only 72 yards through three games...plus his fumble against Baltimore.
The less said about poor Luke Schoonmaker, the better, after his nightmare false start in Rio that ended any chance of a touchdown for Dallas.
That leaves Spann-Ford, who has made a habit of delivering brutal hits on special teams, while being a demon in the run game.
Oh, and he's caught all three passes this season for 33 yards, and his 11.0 yards per catch is second behind only CeeDee Lamb (15.5) for Dallas.
So, has Spann-Ford earned more reps on offense as a result of his early-season work?
"Yeah, he absolutely has," Schottenheimer said. "I think you look at the run-after-catch play (it was 19 yards) he had on the check-down; he's shown the ability to do that. I thought it was an incredible run, even better ball security with the guy chasing him. We have great confidence in Brev."
"You know how productive Fergie has been, scoring points for us, certainly a security blanket, but Brevyn is a guy that we have great confidence in. We'll run anything with him that we would do with Fergie as well."
Over three games, Spann-Ford has been a bit-part player, totaling 62 offensive snaps (33 percent) and 41 on special teams (54 percent); compared with Schoonmaker's 45 on offense and 36 on special teams, it feels like the die has already been cast there.
But could Brevyn overtake Ferguson? Well, if No. 87 continues to have his fumbling issues, absolutely, but that will likely happen next year.
Ferguson has played 128 offensive snaps (68 percent), so double what Spann-Ford has, and we can make an argument that Brevyn deserves some of that.
And I think that is what Schottenheimer was suggesting as well. More snaps for Spann-Ford because he has proven to be a reliable target; he gets dirty in the run game and hits people for fun on special teams.
Time to let No. 89 loose.
