How Coach 'Christian Parker's Vision' Led Cowboys To New-Look Move cover image

The Cowboys have landed on their new defensive coordinator, in Christian Parker, and he made quite the impression.

The Dallas Cowboys produced a thorough interview process for their defensive coordinator position, and Brian Schottenheimer knew exactly what he wanted.

Someone who is a good teacher, a great communicator, and a coordinator who is going to hold everyone accountable, both on and off the field.

Tick, tick, and tick.

With the Cowboys interviewing a host of candidates, Schottenheimer cast that net wide, and it hauled in Christian Parker, the Philadelphia Eagles' passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach under Vic Fangio.

The reaction to the news tells you all you need to know about the hire, with many praising the Cowboys for taking the chance on Parker, who many think is one of the brightest defensive minds in football.

Of course, there is risk, given that Christian has not called plays in the NFL before, but this is exactly what Cowboys Nation wanted -- a change in approach.

And they've got it.

And after interviewing so many candidates, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones detailed what made Dallas certain that Parker was their guy.

"Start with coach Schottenheimer has a vision for the type of defense he wanted to have that complement what we do on offense," Jones said. "At the end of the day, it was Christian's vision.

"Not only for the type of defense he wants to play in terms of the personality it's going to have and the type of culture he wants to create over on that side of the ball, but also the wrinkles that he could bring that really would fit the pieces that we have in place."

Parker's vision for the defense won Dallas over.

Exactly what that will be is unknown, but as Parker begins to assemble his coaching staff, we will get a better idea. Dallas is interviewing Steelers' outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin, which, for some, is another great move, given Pittsburgh's linebacker play.

Also, who the franchise targets in free agency will tell us a lot about how Christian wants his unit to play.

Then we have the draft, in which Dallas has, we think, two first-round picks to use on defense, provided the Cowboys stay true to their draft board.

But Christian's vision is what sold the Cowboys on hiring him, and now we eagerly await to see exactly what Parker's vision for Dallas is.
