Williams hasn't developed into the player the Cowboys hoped for, and now that he is a free agent, a decision must be made.
The Dallas Cowboys' defense wasn't good in 2025, and despite the statements of having a good group of pass rushers, that never really hit home.
Jadeveon Clowney was the only consistent performer, as well as rookie Donovan Ezeiruaku and James Houston.
But one player Dallas had hoped to be one of the key pieces of their pass rush department was Sam Williams.
Now four years in (Williams missed 2024 with an ACL injury), Sam has just 9.5 sacks in three seasons, and unfortunately, has developed a reputation for making silly plays more consistently than good ones.
The question now becomes do the Cowboys re-sign an underperforming pass rusher?
Our own Mike Fisher predicts Sam's time in Dallas comes to an end this offseason.
"He was supposed to be one of the reasons the defensive end group would thrive after the Micah Parsons trade," Fish wrote. "He totaled one sack as he tries to put behind him a reputation for making more goofy plays that he does big ones.
"Somebody else will overpay on athleticism and potential."
Now, is there something to be said for Williams being just one season removed from his knee injury? Sure.
But the production prior to that wasn't what the franchise wanted.
Costly penalties, whether it be on defense or special teams, plagued him early on. And the most frustrating part is that we saw glimpses of his pass-rush talent, but it just wasn't consistent enough.
If the Cowboys did bring Sam back, the financials would fascinate me.
Is he worth another one-year deal? A chance for the new coordinator to get the most out of him?
The next couple of months will be interesting, but it does feel like Williams' time in Dallas could be coming to an end.
