Dallas drafted Penn State offensive tackle Drew Shelton in the fourth round, and there's a thought the franchise might have gotten a steal.
The one thing the Dallas Cowboys usually do well is draft offensive linemen.
With the likes of Tyler Booker, Tyler Smith, Tyler Guyton, Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, Travis Frederick, and all the way back to Larry Allen, Dallas does it perhaps better than most.
Which is why fourth-round pick Drew Shelton out of Penn State is such an interesting selection.
We have heard head coach Brian Schottenheimer state that the rookie will look to come in and compete with Guyton and Nate Thomas, which in itself is already an endorsement.
Shelton will come in and likely be a swing tackle for the Cowboys, and make no mistake, Guyton and right tackle Terence Steele are on notice.
No, they won't likely lose their spot, but Shelton will push the duo to new heights, well, that is what Dallas is hoping for anyway.
And for ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, he knows the Cowboys are high on Shelton.
"Some inside Dallas' building were stumping hard for fourth-round offensive lineman Drew Shelton -- as early as Day 2," Fowler wrote. "The coaching staff is high on Shelton's ceiling. Only so few humans can play tackle in the NFL, and he's one of them," a team source said. "Super athletic." The Cowboys have a history of drafting successful offensive linemen."
So, the Cowboys are high on Shelton, and the fact that they see him as a player who can push those already on the roster shows their faith that the rookie can come in and push the rest of the group.
Boasting 34 career starts in college, Shelton won't come to The Star with the need to get reps in order to get the scheme down pat; he already knows football.
Training camp in Oxnard looms as a fascinating watch, because if Schottenheimer thinks Shelton can come in and compete, you better believe he'll at least get the chance to prove his worth.
And as we know, in the NFL, all you need is a chance, and if Drew takes his, the makeup of Dak Prescott's offensive line could look a little different in 2026.
Dallas is clearly high on Shelton, and as a fourth-round selection, not much is likely expected of him from outside the building.
But inside? He's got every chance to make a name for himself from Day 1.
