Thompson comes to The Star ready to make his mark, and he's hell-bent on bringing everyone else along with him.

The Dallas Cowboys' early free-agent plans were clear: to fill as many roster holes on defense as possible.

In total, four key players have come to The Star: Rashan Gary, Jalen Thompson, Cobie Durant, and P.J. Locke.

All fill a need for the defense, and after last season's horror show, as Jerry Jones stated, the only way to go is up.

But how you get there matters.

Last year, there was constant miscommunication in Matt Eberflus' defense. It made veteran players look like they were playing their first-ever snaps in the NFL.

It was tough to watch as the defense got obliterated in every phase.

But the hope is that new defensive coordinator Christian Parker can turn this ship around.

As for Thompson, he's ready to give the defense everything it had been missing last season.

"Coming into the league, that was the biggest thing for me: being vocal as a safety, making sure everyone knew where to go and where to be aligned," Thompson said via dallascowboys.com.

"My job, as a safety, is to know everybody's job on the football field. With me bringing that to the team, we can only elevate and go up from there."

That will be music to Dallas' ears.

Coming into a secondary that also has Malik Hooker as his starting partner, it has become clear straight away that Parker's defense will require his players to be able to play in multiple positions.

Granted, that is nothing new for NFL teams.

And as far as Thompson is concerned, he's a Swiss-Army knife on the field.

"I see myself playing slot, deep, strong, free — wherever they need me," Thompson said. "I've got tape that shows it and I'm ready to get it going, bro."

So while many Cowboys fans are a little annoyed at the lack of free agency moves, they have to be happy with Thompson.

A veteran who can help be the glue that keeps this defense under Parker together, as the Cowboys look to turn this defensive ship around.

And make no mistake, Jalen will be one of the leaders tasked with making it happen.
