The Cowboys have signed running back Israel Abanikanda to their practice squad.

The Dallas Cowboys' running back room has been in some sort of fine form this season, led by Javonte Williams, but behind him, it has been musical chairs.

And now more moving is happening.

The Cowboys announced on Sunday that they are signing running back Israel Abanikanda to the practice squad in what could be seen as another message to the room that you better get ready to compete.

It was thought entering the season that promising rookie Jaydon Blue would be the "easy" pick to back up Javonte, but Texas Longhorns product Blue has struggled for consistency, both on and off the field, to the point where he has been a healthy scratch the past couple of weeks.

Then we have Malik Davis, fresh off his 43-yard touchdown in the win against the Kansas City Chiefs, as he is grabbing his chances with both hands, posting 20, 24, and then 47 yards in his past three games, averaging no less than 5.0 yards per carry.

Now we add in Abanikanda, who was a fifth-round pick for the New York Jets back in 2023. He only played six games in his rookie season, posting 22 yards as he has struggled to break through.

Having spent time on the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers' practice squads, the 5-10, 217-pound Pitt product now comes to The Star looking to make his next stop count, and maybe get on the field as part of coach Brian Schottenheimer's offense.

But this move does put Blue's immediate future in question, and it was already on shaky ground with Malik playing as well as he has. Now Blue has to compete with another player who has something to prove.

Schotty has preached "compete every day" as his mantra, and right now, Blue needs to heed that message before he ends up slipping further down the depth chart.
