The Dallas Cowboys' offseason to date, one could say, has been a little underwhelming.
While Rashan Gary, Cobie Durant, P.J. Locke, Otito Ogbonnia and Jalen Thompson have been added, the franchise hasn't "busted the budget'' as many had hoped.
Of course, there is still time, but Cowboys Nation isn't holding its breath; it's seen this movie before.
Along with those moves came another headline-grabber, with the Cowboys shipping off a fan favorite and a key presence in the locker room.
Dallas traded defensive tackle Osa Odighiuwa to the San Francisco 49ers and got a third-round pick in return. This comes a little over a year after the Cowboys signed him to an extension.
A good player, and by all accounts an even better leader and teammate, Osa was seen last year, after the horrible news about the passing of Marshan Kneeland, walking and running with a No. 94 flag around AT&T Stadium on gameday.
But as we know in the NFL, things don't always go the way you had hoped, and with Christian Parker coming in and switching schemes, the Cowboys were on the hook for a lot of money, paying three defensive tackles roughly $20 million APY each.
Osa, we think, was the odd man out.
And Jerry Jones gave some details on why Osa was traded away.
“We needed to spread it around a little bit,” Jones said via Schuyler Dixon of the Associated Press. “Let’s not take anything away from him individually, but we’ve got two outstanding football players, we have other backup players, plus we don’t want to rule out drafting a player.”
So, going by Jerry's words, it was Osa who was the odd player out, and as such, was sent on his way to San Francisco.
The Cowboys haven't been the free agency presence many thought they would be, and at the time of writing, you will be hard-pressed to suggest the defense is better than what it was last year.
Yes, there is a clear plan for Parker's "3-4 Hybrid'' defense, with the players brought in and those shipped out. And that includes Osa as a "non-fit.''
But all things considered? Yes, shipping him away still feels a bit "odd.''
