Cowboys owner Jerry Jones knows how crucial it was to secure Javonte Williams' future this offseason.

The offseason for the Dallas Cowboys has gotten off to a positive start. Now, fans hope that will continue.

The hiring (and the process) of Christian Parker, you could argue, has been the franchise's best piece of business as he takes over from Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator.

With many speaking glowingly of Parker and what he accomplished with the Denver Broncos and the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas is hoping Parker brings that to The Star.

But while Parker's hire was good, so too was the franchise's signing of pending free agent Javonte Williams.

A quiet, no-fuss and swift three-year, $24 million deal with $16 million guaranteed was agreed well before free agency.

It now gives the Cowboys some stability at running back, something it hasn't had in the last couple of years.

Fans have noted how proactive the Cowboys were in getting Williams signed, but Javonte also had to want to sign early, and the franchise managed to get it done efficiently.

And make no mistake about it, not many are happier that Javonte is remaining a Cowboy than owner Jerry Jones.

"I thought our running back last year was as incrementally important to the success we had on offense, he'd be in the top two or three as far as what he brought to the table for us on offense last year, really glad to get him," Jerry said.

Jerry is right: Williams had a big role in the offensive success.

His 1,201 rushing yards and 11 TDs make for good reading, but Javonte's value to the Cowboys wasn't just running the football.

There's another arrow in his quiver that you can argue is equally important.

And that's his skill in pass protection.

We lost count of how many times a free blitzer had eyes for Dak Prescott, ready to take his soul. Only for No. 33 to be a brick wall, standing the defender up, and giving Dak an extra second or two to get the ball out to CeeDee Lamb or George Pickens.

Such was Javonte's elite-level blocking that when he wasn't in the game, Prescott was hurried a lot more than usual.

There has been speculation that Javonte might just be one piece to the backfield puzzle in the sense that Dallas could add another first-team-level guy.

We don't see it.

Thanks to swift action by the front office, Williams is a Cowboy for the next three seasons as a key piece of the offense - and a full-time piece - is staying put.

Jerry is happy, and frankly, so are we.
