The Cowboys' head coach has come under fire for his conservative play-calling, and Jerry Jones admitted to Dallas having a safe game plan against Arizona.
Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has come under intense scrutiny for his play-calling, especially its conservative nature.
The loss to the Arizona Cardinals was the latest example of Schottenheimer playing not to lose, rather than trying to win, and again, he paid the ultimate price for it.
Dallas got the ball late in the fourth quarter, up 27-24 after Ryan Flournoy recovered the onside kick. The Cowboys were set up with a first-and-10 at the Cardinals' 20-yard line.
One first down would end the game. But CeeDee Lamb didn't enter the field of play until third down, and George Pickens wasn't seen at all during the drive.
Schottenheimer called a run, then Dak Prescott was sacked, and then a give-up run with Javonte Williams as Dallas settled for a field goal.
In overtime, after the run game hadn't worked all day, Schottenheimer again called a run on first down, before an incomplete pass, and then Dak was sacked on third down. Just yuck.
The Cowboys weren't aggressive, and when the game was there to be put away, Schottenheimer didn't have his best offensive weapons on the field. Why?
When asked whether it is fair to criticize Schottenheimer for being conservative on 105.3 The Fan, owner Jerry Jones gave an answer I honestly can't believe he said out loud.
"We were playing a game to avoid turnovers the best we could," Jerry said. "The game plan you saw was doing that. You can call that conservative if you want to, but the game plan was based upon us being able to run the ball better than we ran it.
"We had a game plan the other day that we were going to avoid those turnovers and we were going to run that ball."
Going into a game, against a Cardinals team that was beat-up, was 2-5 and had third- and fourth-string players on the field, Dallas, with Dak, Lamb, Pickens, Javonte, Flournoy, and an offensive line that has three first-round picks, one of which is an All-Pro, played it safe??
That is baffling.
You have to trust your players, especially when you have a Pro Bowl quarterback, one of the best receivers in football, and a Pro Bowl receiver riding shotgun.
That is the mentality that everyone in Cowboys Nation has criticized Schottenheimer for, and Jerry just admitted that Dallas coached the game not to lose.
And we know that when you take that sort of approach into a game, more often than not, you do, in fact, lose the game.
For me, that perfectly encapsulates the problems with the 2026 Cowboys.
They're playing scared, when they have zero reason to. And it's alarming.
