The Cowboys already have a crowded quarterback room, but could the franchise add another one in the draft?
For most, the Dallas Cowboys' NFL Draft has to be centered on overhauling the defense for Christian Parker.
With eight total selections, which includes two first-round picks, the Cowboys do have the ammunition to get a handful of starters if things go well.
We have often asked: given their defensive needs, can the Cowboys really not consider any offensive players in the draft?
The only real need is right tackle, and even that is a stretch, so it would need to be a situation where a star falls into the Cowboys' lap, similar to CeeDee Lamb.
One position you can safely say doesn't need an addition is quarterback.
Dak Prescott, Joe Milton, and Sam Howell make up the room right now, but ESPN's Ben Solak thinks that a fifth-round pick could be used on a quarterback for Dallas.
But who? Solak thinks Miami's Carson Beck.
"The QB2 job is up for grabs in Dallas, with incoming Sam Howell battling incumbent Joe Milton III for the right to back up Dak Prescott," Solak wrote. "This is not a particularly thrilling QB2 battle.
"I remain dubious, as it's tough to find a cardinal trait for Beck to hang his hat on as a starting NFL quarterback. But Beck has maturity and big-game experience, and the Cowboys' past couple of forays into QB2 development have been heavily indexed on traits (Milton, Trey Lance) -- it's time to zag back to the Cooper Rush side of the aisle."
Given the Cowboys have a couple of fifth-round picks, can the franchise afford to take a flier on a quarterback, given the defensive needs?
That is an interesting discussion point, and with Howell signed, any quarterback you take in the draft isn't likely to beat out him or Milton for a spot on the roster.
So, would Dallas be better suited taking a defensive player to add depth to any position, rather than a dart throw (again) at quarterback?
While it is an intriguing idea, I don't see Dallas adding a quarterback, though the old adage of taking a quarterback every draft in hopes of hitting on one comes to mind here.
Will Dallas take a quarterback in the draft? Color me skeptical on that.
