'Touch the Stove': Cowboys Class In Session Under New Coach Christian Parker cover image

One of Parker's key qualities is his ability to teach, but what makes him a great teacher?

One thing that we knew Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer wanted in his new defensive coordinator was for them to be a great teacher.

With Matt Eberflus' tenure in Dallas being horrible, we often saw miscommunication and even players confused as to where to line up pre-snap.

There are NFL players. They aren't silly. But it looked that way under Eberflus.

Hence why Schottenheimer wanted a coordinator who, by his own words, can take complicated information and make it easy to digest.

Well, that is perhaps one of Christian Parker's best qualities.

Going by what we've heard over the past month, the Cowboys have gotten themselves a future head coach in waiting, and with Parker now taking over from Eberflus, we are about to see how good a teacher he is.

But what makes him a good teacher?

"You have to know the student first and foremost," Parker said. "You have to know who you're talking to. What might hit one player's brain is going to hit different than another.

"Being thorough, detailed, very clear, and concise in terms of your messaging and when to correct, when not to correct. Sometimes players got to touch the stove. You just want to do it in a controlled environment."

That sounds superb in theory.

You can make the case that Eberflus didn't do any of those things, as Dallas' defense looked at sea too many times in the season, a time when things should have been starting to click.

And for Parker, as it relates to how he teaches, well, there's more than one way to skin a cat, so to speak.

"The diversity of teaching, whether it's on the field, in the meeting room, Kahoot quizzes, physical quizzes, showing them video examples, having them teaching in front of a room," Parker added.

"There's so many different ways that you can get in the weeds of teaching scheme, technique, situational awareness. You just want to expose players to as many different examples because it's going to hit everybody differently in terms of how they're able to learn that."

So Parker knows exactly what he wants out of his defense, and he knows the way he's going to go about it.

Yes, initially, it seems like the Cowboys have a home-run hire, but as we often say around here: Let the cake bake.

Parker made a great first impression. Now let's see if he can back it up.
