Let's clear up the confusion regarding why the Cowboys didn't let Trevon Diggs play in the loss to the Vikings.

The Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night slumped to their seventh loss of the season, this time against the Minnesota Vikings by a 34-26 score ... as all the while former All-Pro corner Trevon Diggs looked on from the sidelines. ...

And as much of the world watching on national TV wondered what he was doing over there.

An odd and even controversial story for the majority of this season has been about Trevon's availability. Some - including Diggs himself - thought he'd would be playing against the Vikings with an activation from IR that would put him back on the field for the first time since Week 6.

But I've written frequently that there is a disconnect between Diggs and his employers. And it was clear to me that Brian Schottenheimer and the coaching staff, who have been preaching consistency for Trevon, were not satisfied with a connection there.

Nor, I might add, is the front office satisfied.

    So that was odd.

After the game, which dumped Dallas to 6-7-1 and virtually eliminated from its playoff shot, came owner Jerry Jones, who threw gasoline on the fire of this Diggs story.

On the subject of Diggs and why he didn't play, Jerry left some confused.

“When we looked at practice, we didn't like what we saw relative to his health and his ability to make plays," Jerry said.

    But I'm not confused.

Just a couple of days ago, Diggs said he was healthy and expected to play. But I was told specifically from people inside The Star that on Wednesday in particular, he did not have a "good practice.''

And that he did not "make plays.''

And now we have Trevon adding in his two cents to this bizarre tale.

“I don’t know what else I need to do," a frustrated Diggs told the media after the loss. "At this point I feel like it’s not up to me what I do … I’m just showing up every day and working.”

I've reported that Dallas and Diggs are almost certainly heading their separate ways in a few months. He can be cut or he can be traded (for whatever) and the Cowboys can gain $12 million in cap room.

That is now pretty much the plan.

With three games left, do the Cowboys have another decision to make?

Do they allow the likes of Shavon Revel Jr. and Caelen Carson to get valuable reps? Or do they ease Diggs back in, thinking he might be a superior player than they are? Or a third option: His 21-day window is closing; if he's not activated this week, he's ineligible to come back at all, and would therefore be unable to showcase himself for potential bidders next spring.

Diggs says he was healthy enough to play. I don't think he's lying.

The Cowboys "didn't like what they saw'' of him recently. I don't think they're lying, either.
