Miller signed with the Cowboys weeks ago, and the veteran pass rusher has more of an eye off the field than he does on it.
When the Dallas Cowboys signed veteran All-Pro edge rusher Von Miller, thoughts immediately went to what he could do on the field for Christian Parker's defense.
Coming off a year with the Washington Commanders that saw Miller post nine sacks from roughly 37 percent of the snaps under Dan Quinn, there is still juice in Von's tank.
But there were those who thought Miller was coming to Dallas to be an every-down guy on defense. We knew that was never going to be the case.
A pass rush specialist on third-down if you will, that is his role.
But given Miller's wealth of knowledge when it comes to pass rushing, the wisdom he could impart on the likes of Malachi Lawrence, Donovan Ezeiruaku, and LT Overton is priceless.
And speaking on his Free Range podcast, Miller revealed that the Cowboys aren't paying him ($5.5 million base on a one-year deal) to be a sack monster on the field; they are paying him for what he brings off the field and the knowledge he has from several Super Bowl cultures he's been involved in.
"My contract is what it is, they’re not paying me for what I do on the football field," Miller said. "If I go out there and get eight sacks, 10 sacks, I’m way underpaid.
"They’re paying me, and my contract is what it is to be the locker room guy, to be a great teammate, paying me to be on the team to be the best teammate I could possibly be and help these guys whatever that may be."
And I think that will be Miller's greatest asset to this team.
Yes, if he can go out and get a handful of sacks for Parker? Great.
But his long-lasting impression that he can leave on Dallas' younger pass rushers could be invaluable.
Teaching them techniques, the right way to prepare, and everything in between. Miller has even been helping All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
So, it is clear Miller's brain is perhaps worth more to the Cowboys than his on-field production, which we still think plays a role in 2026.
In a similar way to DeMarcus Ware when he arrived in Denver, when Miller was there, Von is now returning the favor in Dallas, looking to help shape the next generation of pass rushers at The Star.
