When the Dallas Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, the hope was that the franchise would go through a proper process to find his successor.
In previous years, we have seen "buddy hires" and only a select few candidates being interviewed.
There wasn't a wide net cast to find the best candidate; Dallas made decisions for comfort rather than for the benefit of the team.
But it appears head coach Brian Schottenheimer is breaking that mold.
It started last offseason with the hires of Klayton Adams and Conor Riley to the offensive staff.
We have heard how the Cowboys wanted to "cast a wide net" in searching for their next defensive coordinator. At that point, it was just white noise.
But under Schottenheimer, it's not white noise; it's the truth.
In total, nine candidates were interviewed by the Cowboys. And that list was dwindled down to four.
And now the Cowboys have their coordinator, in Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach and passing game coordinator Christian Parker.
The general reaction tells you a lot, with many close to the Cowboys raving about the hire.
But our own Mike Fisher has another reason to celebrate the hire, or moreso, the process that led to it.
“I haven't looked at this, I haven't looked at the boiling them down, buttoned up numbers, there's no way Jerry [Jones] has ever interviewed nine people before for a coordinator's job,” Fish said. “No way that he went into the process said, "Let's do nine, 10, not even close." I bet you the average is three or four.
“So give them credit for this. They said it was going to be Schotty’s hire, and they said they're going to do a wide net. They did that. Doesn't mean it's going to work, but so far so good.”
Is that a hint that under Schottenheimer, things are slowly changing? Well, the proof is staring you in the face.
The next priority is to figure out who will be part of Parker's staff. Who will be kept, and who won't.
With the Cowboys poaching, according to some, one of the brightest defensive minds in football, there is a reason for hope heading into 2026.
Granted, most didn't even know Christian Parker until a few weeks ago, but now that they do, the more you listen to people in the know, the more this hire should get Cowboys Nation a little excited.
