Cowboys Trade Move: Predicting Dee Winters As Major Cog For New Defense

The Dallas Cowboys' defense last season wasn't good. In fact, they were downright bad, hence the complete overhaul both on and off the field.

New coaches and a handful of new players have fresh hope and optimism that Christian Parker and his unit can turn things around in a hurry.

But one position still has fans a little uneasy, and that's at linebacker. Yes, you could say pass rusher is another spot, but we'll stick with linebacker.

Throughout the offseason, it has been DeMarvion Overshown taking reps with the green dot as he looks to return to his 2024 form as Parker's quarterback of the defense.

But we roughly know what we are going to get from D-Mo if he is healthy, and that makes who partners with him in Parker's defense interesting.

Enter trade acquisition Dee Winters.

Plucked from the San Francisco 49ers, Winters started all 17 games for Kyle Shanahan's team last season, plus their playoff loss.

Seen as a shrewd piece of business, the addition of Winters has gone under the radar this offseason, given all the change that has happened on that side of the ball.

But could he become a key cog for Parker? Sure.

Of course, we will see his true role as training camp gets underway, and the Cowboys clearly feel good about the linebacker spot, as no talks with Miami Dolphins star Jordyn Brooks have taken place... yet.

49ers' general manager John Lynch spoke on the trade of Winters shortly after it was confirmed, and it gave an insight into how the franchise saw him.

"That's tough because Dee's a guy that's done a lot for us here, he's one of the favorite guys in that locker room, he's done a lot for us on the field," Lynch said. "We felt like we were in a good position at linebacker."

So that is the sort of player Dallas is getting.

Now, will he be a star of the defense? Who knows, but right now, all Dallas needs is competent players who fit into what Parker is trying to accomplish, and Dee does.

Training camp will be a good test to see exactly where Winters stands, but he could go largely unnoticed this offseason due to all the changes, which could make a potential good year from the young linebacker be good for the soul.
