The Dallas Cowboys have established themselves as a high scoring team, both in regards to their own offense and the amount of points they let their opponents score. While many assume this could be a reprieve for the defense while playing the New York Jets, New York actually scores the No. 19 most points per game at 22.5.
While that’s not eye catching, it’s hardly the anemic output many fans expected from the Jets. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some players to watch on offense from both teams.
The next man up for the Cowboys offensive line, Thomas filled in admirably after Tyler Guyton left mid game with an injury against the Green Bay Packers. In his NFL debut, the 2024 sixth-round pick recorded a 57.2 PFF pass blocking grade and a 60.3 run blocking mark.
Not eye popping numbers by any means, so much so that they’d be considered just average by PFF. Still, for a player making his debut in a sudden change situation, it’s encouraging to see him show competence while giving hope that he could be even better with a week to prepare in case Guyton can’t go on Sunday.
Yes, we’re double dipping with the offensive line. While Hoffman has recorded a 68.9 run blocking grade through 159 snaps so far this season, his 32.3 pass blocking grade is alarming.
Much of that is due to him allowing nine pressures, seven hurries, and two hits in his two starts, although he’s yet to give up a sack. If the Cowboys are to continue their elite production offense, they’re going to need Hoffman to clean it up before the dam truly breaks.
A second round pick in this past draft, the Jets have slowly gotten Taylor more and more involved. Starting in Week 1, he’s received one, two, six, and finally seven targets in Week 4, converting five of those seven into catches for 65 yards.
The Cowboys have struggled against what would be considered top tight ends, letting Tucker Kraft and Dallas Goedert both record at least five catches, while limiting lesser talents such as Cole Kmet (one catch) and Theo Johnson (four) to more modest outputs.
It’ll be interesting to watch just how well Taylor fares, as Dallas is clearly vulnerable to elite talents at the position. This will be an important measuring stick game for both the young player and the Cowboys.
With Braelon Allen out indefinitely due to a knee injury, there’s a large role needing to be filled in the Jets backfield. While Davis has only recorded 35 carries in his career, he seems likely to get the first chance at filling that role.
And while a backup running back may seem inconsequential, remember that Dallas just surrendered 81 scrimmage yards on 11 touches to Emmanuel Wilson, Green Bay’s backup RB, last week. In an offense largely devoid of noteworthy playmakers, Davis could be one to watch as he looks to make his mark in his first real NFL opportunity.
