Looking ahead to the future, these five quarterbacks could force the Miami Dolphins to replace Malik Willis.
The Miami Dolphins made the change from Tua Tagovailoa to Malik Willis at the quarterback position this offseason. After cutting ties with Tagovailoa, they quickly moved to sign Willis in free agency and gave him a lucrative three-year, $67.5 million contract.
Willis has performed well to begin his tenure with the Dolphins. He hasn't been a "star," but he has shown flashes of long-term potential.
Through his first six games with the team, the 27-year-old quarterback has completed 57.6 percent of his pass attempts for 1,057 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions. He has also picked up 223 yards and scored three more times on the ground.
Even though there is a chance Willis could be the long-term option for Miami under center, there are players who could force the team to reconsider. Let's take a look at five of them.\
5. Arch Manning, Texas Longhorns
Granted, Manning has yet to live up to the hype that surrounded him coming into his career at Texas. This season, he has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 1,507 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while also running for 110 yards and two more scores.
Manning may not have lived up to the hype, but there is no denying his long-term potential. If he is available when the Dolphins are on the clock in the 2027 NFL Draft, he would be well worth the consideration.
4. Mac Jones, San Francisco 49ers
Another intriguing veteran option could be Mac Jones. His contract with the 49ers is set to run out at the end of this season and he has proven himself capable of being a starting option.
Last season in San Francisco, Jones stepped in for the injured Brock Purdy. He played in 11 games, throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. At 28 years old, Jones still has plenty of time to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL.
3. J.J. McCarthy, New York Giants
Since being acquired by the Giants, McCarthy has won the starting job from Jameis Winston. However, his future with New York could be in jeopardy due to the presence of Jaxson Dart.
In his three games played with the Giants, the 23-year-old quarterback has thrown for 495 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The former No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has made the most of his new scenario. Perhaps the Dolphins could consider bringing him in to compete with Willis.
2. Darian Mensah, Miami Hurricanes
Sticking with a fellow Miami star in Darian Mensah would be a high-potential situation for the Dolphins. He has put up huge numbers for the Hurricanes this season and is expected to be a top pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Mensah has completed 81.4 percent of his passes for 2,151 yards, 22 touchdowns, and an interceptions this season, while also running for 73 yards and two more touchdowns. If Miami has a chance to draft him next offseason, the team should take it.
1. Julian Sayin, Ohio State
Even though Sayin has not received the most hype in college, he might just be the most NFL-ready prospect in the 2027 draft class.
In his three years at Ohio State, two as the starter, Sayin has completed 73.4 percent of his passes for 5,701 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He has elite arm talent. Sayin would be worth bringing onboard as competition for Willis and to eventually take over the starting job.
