The Miami Dolphins are ushering in their new era of football, and they have brought in former Green Bay Packers VP of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as the team's new general manager.
Sullivan is expected to put together his front office staff that will navigate the Dolphins' nightmare cap situation, along with evaluating the talent currently on the roster. As he is not expected to do this alone, the team has hired an assistant general manager under him.
Former Atlanta Falcons assistant general manager Kyle Smith has reportedly been added to the front office for the Dolphins in the same capacity.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported on the news of Smith's hiring, stating:
"The Dolphins are hiring Kyle Smith as their assistant GM, per source.
Smith, who most recently held the same title in Atlanta, is a respected evaluator. Another big addition to Miami’s staff."
Smith played as a wide receiver for a brief period before transitioning into operations. He began his journey in 2010 as a scouting intern for the then-Washington Redskins.
Smith would remain with the Commanders through to the 2020 season, being promoted to director of college personnel, and finally vice president of player personnel.
Through his work in the front office, Smith then landed with the Falcons in 2021, where he served as the vice president of player personnel, eventually being promoted to assistant general manager from 2023 to 2025.
Now, he is joining Sullivan's staff in the front office for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins made sweeping changes following the firing of former general manager Chris Grier. Grier was relieved of his duties in October, and the team also let go of Co-directors of player personnel Adam Engroff and Anthony Hunt, along with former assistant general manager Marvin Allen.
With Sullivan hired, he now gets the chance to put together his staff, and Smith is one of the main hires thus far for the team.
The Dolphins also hired new head coach Jeff Hafley, who will start filling out the coaching staff as well.
There is a lot of work to get done between now and free agency, which begins on March 11. The roster will need to be looked at, and Sullivan and company will need to determine which players will be retained or not.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is also due a staggering amount of guaranteed money, and Sullivan and Smith will need to determine what the organization does with that situation.
For now, it appears the Dolphins brought in a very well-respected front office executive to help guide the team into this new era.
