Dolphins coach targeted by Jets for their open DC position cover image

The New York Jets have interviewed a rising coach on the current Miami Dolphins staff.

With the Miami Dolphins moving on from Mike McDaniel, there is a good chance that most of the current coaching staff might be looking for jobs elsewhere. The typical case for most new head coaches is to bring in a staff of their design.

There are also instances of coaches getting bigger opportunities elsewhere, which is the case for the Dolphins' cornerbacks coach, Mathieu Araujo.

Per the official social media account for the New York Jets, Araujo is one of eight coaches that the Jets have interviewed for their vacant defensive coordinator position.

Araujo is a solid coach and joined the Dolphins staff in 2022 as the assistant defensive backs coach. He was promoted to cornerbacks coach in 2024.

The 2025 season was Araujo's fourth year at the NFL level, and he spent seven years coaching at the collegiate level.

Araujo had his hands full with the Dolphins losing Storm Duck, Kader Kohou, and Artie Burns for the season. Duck was able to return after a stint on IR, but was soon lost for the season with a knee injury.

With the cornerback unit suffering heavy losses, the Dolphins brought in Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas to help with depth. Douglas ended up having a big year, picking up 62 tackles, two interceptions, a sack, and surrendering only a 54.5 completion percentage and 73.0 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks.

Douglas did give up three touchdowns, but he otherwise had a solid year as a cover corner.

Douglas ranked 19th out of 114 qualified cornerbacks on PFF. Simply put, he had a fantastic first year with the Dolphins.

A big reason for his success is due to the coaching of Araujo, who helped to guide the ailing unit despite losing three players to season-ending injuries.

Araujo is a young and dynamic coach who could be on the rise in terms of a new position. If the Jets do not hire him, he may land a similar or better job with another team.

Whoever the new head coach is for the Dolphins, they might also choose to retain Araujo, but only time will tell if that is the case.

McDaniel is taking interviews with other teams for both the head coach and offensive coordinator positions. If he takes a head coach position elsewhere, he may choose to bring some of his staff over from the Dolphins to his new team. That could also include Araujo.
