Miami Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan believes Jacob Rodriguez could potentially become the leader of the defense.
The Miami Dolphins enter the 2026 season with an overhauled roster and front office as the franchise prepares to begin a new era.
A major part of that new chapter is rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan spoke highly of Rodriguez, saying that the former Texas Tech Red Raider could potentially be the leader of the defense.
"He’s physically and mentally tough; he’s mature; he’s a leader both vocally and by example. It was all very attractive to us, especially when you're talking about a guy who could potentially lead your defense," Sullivan said.
"You really cannot say enough good things about Jacob Rodriguez," Sullivan added.
The Dolphins are revamping in a big way, especially on the defensive side. Rodriguez could be a player who sets the tone and leads the charge on that side of the ball for years to come.
Miami selected the Minnesota native with the 43rd overall pick in the second round, and one could argue he has the potential to be the steal of the draft.
Rodriguez made a name for himself in the 2025 college season, leading the Red Raiders to one of the best defenses in the country.
The 23-year-old closed out his college career as one of the more accomplished defensive players in Texas Tech history.
His numbers spoke volumes, and so did his impact. During his time in Lubbock, Rodriguez was the undisputed leader of the defense, and his overall influence was a major reason why the Dolphins were so eager to draft him.
In his final season as a Red Raider, he finished with 128 tackles (63 solo), 11.0 tackles for loss, and a sack.
In addition, Rodriguez made a name for himself as a playmaker, recording seven forced fumbles, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Rodriguez's performance led to winning practically every collegiate award besides the Heisman, for which he was nominated. However, the linebacker received the Butkus Award, Lombardi Award, Bronco Nagurski Award, and was a unanimous All-American.
This season is not about wins or losses for the Dolphins; their moves this offseason indicated as much. However, this 2026 season is about finding the right pieces to build the identity they want.
Rodriguez appears to be the right fit due to his highly disruptive and versatile play. He possesses all the tools to be not only the best player on that defense, but ultimately the leader Sullivan envisions him to be.
