Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley revealed that De'Von Achane may have suffered a significant knee injury.
Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley took the podium following the team's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he dropped an update on running back De'Von Achane.
Achane suffered what appeared to be an odd knee injury early in the game, and he was immediately taken out of the game. Hafley then revealed that the initial information on the injury is "not optimistic."
Hafley did state that the team would gather more information, and additional tests are likely to be done before a confirmation can happen. However, the head coach did not sound happy about what he knows thus far.
"To be honest with you, it does not sound optimistic," Hafley said.
Again, more testing will be done to determine exactly what happened, but Achane not returning to the game was already a clear sign that he suffered something significant.
Achane had run the ball four times before the injury occurred, and the fifth run of his day resulted in the injury. He had been hit by a Kansas City Chiefs defender, and his helmet appeared to be pulled down.
During replays, it appeared that Achane's right leg had been dragged on the ground during the hit, which may have caused whatever injury he sustained.
Following the incident, Achane was standing straight up, so it did not appear that he was hurt. However, he looked to be in immediate pain.
The Dolphins' training staff came out to walk with the running back as he limped off the field. Following a few moments in the blue medical tent, Achane walked to the locker room with the training staff.
Achane was deemed questionable to return with a knee injury. He was ruled out shortly after, and he reappeared on the sideline without his helmet or pads.
With Achane out, the Dolphins then had to rely on Ollie Gordon II and wide receiver Malk Washington.
Hafley said they were comfortable using Washington as an emergency backup, which they had to do. The usual backup running back, Jaylen Wright, had been ruled out due to a foot injury, leaving depth at the running back position already questionable.
Gordon then suffered cramps and was taken off the field. This left Miami with Washington as the lone back.
Gordon eventually returned after receiving IV treatment, as he suffered cramping during the game.
Now, the Dolphins may need to elevate Jarquez Hunter in Week 4, especially if Wright cannot play.
Achane's injury has not been confirmed, but Hafley stated that he would know more on Monday.
