The Miami Dolphins have lost linebacker KJ Britt to a division rival, but retain fellow linebacker Willie Gay.

The Miami Dolphins have had themselves a busy offseason. They have already made a flurry of moves going back to Monday and they have yet to slow down.

The Dolphins have lost one player but have retained one as well. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dolphins have lost linebacker KJ Britt to their division rivals, the New England Patriots.

While they lost Britt to the Patriots, they were able to retain fellow linebacker Willie Gay.

Gay will return to Miami on a one-year deal.

As for Britt, he spent one season in Miami. He will join the third team of his career, and he will remain in the AFC East.

Britt was heavily involved in the Dolphins' special teams, playing 77 percent of the unit's snaps. On the defensive side of the ball, he played in only 14 percent of snaps.

His 2025 season was a solid one, considering his limited role. Britt played in all 17 games last season, along with one start. In those contests, he recorded 35 total tackles and one quarterback hit.

He signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins last March.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Britt in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. They selected him 176 overall and spent the first four seasons of his career in Tampa Bay.

In 59 games with 15 starts in Central Florida, Britt recorded 126 total tackles, four tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, half a sack, and three passes defended. Britt attended Auburn and was named to the first-team All-SEC in his junior season.

While they lost Britt, they were able to retain Gay. The 28-year-old will now enter his second season in Miami after playing in all 17 games last season with two starts.

In 2025, Gay recorded 20 total tackles, three tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, two sacks, and two passes defended.

Gay started his career in Kansas City, where he did his part in leading them to back-to-back Super Bowl championships. He's played in 89 games in his career and has recorded 179 solo tackles, nine sacks, three forced fumbles, 22 tackles for loss, and 12 quarterback hits.

The Dolphins are focused on restructuring and establishing a new culture under head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. While Miami is not expected to contend in 2026, the franchise hopes this marks the beginning of a promising new era under a new regime.
